Full Preview of 2018 Preakness Promotions Along With Racebook Bonuses

The field looks to be set and Pimlico Race Course is ready to host the second leg of the 2018 Triple Crown. A field of eight horses will partake in this year’s event. The horse everyone will be watching, of course, is Justify as the colt tries to take the next step toward the Triple Crown after winning the Kentucky Derby in convincing fashion despite the tough conditions.

This will be the 143rd running of the Preakness and the last time we had an eight-horse field was in 2015. American Pharoah won that race on the way to the first Triple Crown since 1978 and Affirmed. Justify is trained by Bob Baffert and will be the heavy favorite to win it all this Saturday. Baffert is horse racing royalty and no stranger to these high stakes races. This will be the fourth Derby winner he has trained and entered the Preakness. All have won.

Evaluating the Field At The Preakness

Good Magic (3-1), the Derby’s runner-up to Justify, will be running as well. At first a hold out, the colt’s trainer, Chad Brown, wanted to see how the horse trained in the days leading up to the race. He apparently liked what he saw, “The horse trained great again this morning and has bounced out of the Derby really well. It’s a huge opportunity, and the way he came out of the race, he deserves another shot.”

While Bolt d’Oro, a favorite Derby runner this year, has pulled out of the Preakness, Lone Sailor (30-1) is in. Although the colt finished eighth at Churchill Downs, the trainer Tom Amoss also feels a second chance is in order. “Not looking to ruffle anybody’s feathers, but the Derby time, particularly the last half-mile, was :53 and change. It’s hard to feel off that race the Preakness isn’t a wide-open race. I’m not saying Lone Sailor is better than those horses, but he had a bad enough trip in the Derby that he deserves another shot.”

Bravazo (18-1), Diamond King (28-1), Quip (12-1), Sporting Chance (28-1), Pony Up (25-1) and Tenfold (20-1) fill out the rest of the small field. Speed is a necessity at the Preakness. The small field will give the horses more room to race and it’s a shorter track than the Churchill Downs. Under the right conditions, Quip and Good Magic should give Justify a race. Remember those names when picking your exotics.
