Last year’s top five were:

  1. Henrik Stenson
  2. Ian Poulter
  3. John Mallinger
  4. Kevin Na
  5. Jim Furyk

But the real action at the years The Players Championship are on the battle between the two many believe are the only ones to watch on this event: Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. After Tiger failed to make the cut in the recent Quail Hollow Championship while Mickelson took second place, it put Mickelson in a unique position. Now, if Mickelson takes the event and Woods fails to finish even in the top 5, Mickelson will surpass Woods and become the number one highest ranked player in the Official World Golf Rankings, and it would be his first time taking that honor too.

That said, Tiger has been on fire, the top ranked player for 258 weeks running and for 598 weeks total over the course of his career. Have won at Quail Hollow, in the meantime, Rory McIlroy has leapt to number 9. In preparation for the event, Tiger Woods played a nine hole practice round on the TPC Sawgrass course with Rod Pampling and Jay Haas.
