NHL Playoff Preview

Eastern Conference

The Stanley Cup winner from last year, Chicago Blackhawks, snuck in with an eighth seed and will take on the #1 seeded Vancouver Canucks to open the first round. Vancouver ended the season with 117 points to win home ice for all its games in post-season and they were winners of the Presidents’ Trophy. Chicago will have a flash back and rely on their young stars from last year like Toews and Kane.

The second seeded San Jose Sharks are a team many feel can win it all this year. They saw their stock rise after Christmas with some great play. They will face the Los Angeles Kings who secured the seven seed. Detroit enters as the third seed with many bettors leaning some money with them to win. The will face the sixth seed Phoenix Coyotes. The four and five seeds find the Anaheim Ducks on home ice entertaining the Nashville Predators.

2011 National Hockey League All Star Game

January 29th, 2011 Knup Posted in Hockey No Comments »

On Sunday Night, January 3oth, 2011 – the National Hockey League will play it’s annual All Star Game. This season is the first time the All Star game went to a draft style. Instead of playing the Western Conference against the Eastern Conference, each team had a set of captains, and they were able to draft their own team. The draft took place Friday night. The game on Sunday will take place at the home of the Carolina Hurricanes. On Saturday night, the National Hockey League will have a skills competition.

The captains for the game were Detroit Red Wings Nicklas Lindstrom and Eric Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes. Lindstrom picked the wrong side of the puck, which gave the #1 pick to Staal. Staal quickly picked his teammate – Cam Ward, the goaltender of the home team Carolina Hurricanes. Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning leads the league in goals scored as was the second pick in the draft. Alex Ovechin went third, and was drafted by Team Staal. Each team had to pick three goaltenders, six defensemen and 12 forwards.

Team Staal’s team also had co-captains Mike Green and Ryan Kesler. The players chose the following players to their team: Cam Ward, Alex Ovechin, Daniel Sedin, Zdeno Chara, Rick Nash, Henrik Lundqvist, Mike Staal, Patrick Sharp, Dan Boyle,  Carey Price, Jeff Skinner, Kris Letang, Claude Giroux, Erik Karsson, Corey Price, Patrik Elias, David Backes and Paul Statsny.

Team Lindstrom was aided by Patrick Kane and Martin St. Louis. They chose the following players: Steven Stamkos, Duncan Keith, Henrik Sedin, Shea Weber, Tim Thomas, Danny Briere, Dustin Byfuglien, Jonathan Toews, Marc-Andre Fluery, Jonas Hillar, Brad Richards, Keith Yandle, Brent Burns, Martin Havlat, Anze Kopitar, Matt Duchene, Loui Erikkson and Phil Kessel.

One notable name not able to play in the All Star game is Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby. Crosby continues to sit out with an injury.

Well, this should be interesting. The odds makers did not place a line for this game. Be sure to check with your favorite sports book right up to the game time for this, and see if you can wager on the team you like in the All Star Game. If we had to choose, and of course we do – we are picking Team Staal. We feel their goaltenders are better, and have an explosive group of offensive players.

Our pick: Bet Team Staal to win the All Star Game on Sunday Night. Get the best in betting here!

IIHF World Championship of Ice Hockey 2010

June 3rd, 2010 Sportsbook Promo Code Staff Posted in Hockey No Comments »

IIHF World Championship of Ice Hockey 2010The 74th annual IIHF World Championship of Ice Hockey takes place May 7th through 23rd, 2010, being held over 3 Germany cities: Gelsenkirchen’s Veltins-Arena, Mannheim’s SAP Arena, and Cologne’s Lanxess Arena.

In the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championships, the competition is between sixteen teams.

In the Preliminary Rounds, teams are initially broken down into four gropus made of four teams a piece. The teams in each group compete against each other for the 1st elimination round, knocking out the poorest performing team in each group – leaving 12 teams to move onto the next round.

  • Group A is Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Slovakia
  • Group B is Canada, Italy, Latvia, and Switzerland
  • Group C is the Czech Republic, France, Norway, and Sweden
  • Group D is Denmakr, Finland, Germany, and the USA

In the next round, the Relegation Round, the remaining 12 teams will be broken down into 2 new groups – with the best 3 teams in group A and group D battling it out in group E, and the teams in group B and C battling in group F.

The IIHF World Hockey Championships will continue to this way through the Quarter Finals into the Semi-Finals and finally the last two matches for the top two teams (the Gold Medal match) and second placing two teams (the Bronze medal match).

For a little help weighing the odds in these upcoming matches, we can look at the recent 2010 IIHF World U20 Championship, in which the winners were the US team, with Canada taking the silver, finishing just one game behind them. Sweden then took the Bronze, beating Switzerland by six games.

After that will come a Relegation Round, in which the four teams in last place will vie for the last two remaining spots in the Quarter Finals, four games in which the four top teams in each of Groups E and F will battle for the four spots in the Semi-finals with the two last-place teams in each group dropping out. That leaves only one more elimination to find the two teams vying for the Gold Medal and the two teams vying for the Bronze.

At the recent 2010 IIHF World U20 Hockey Championship, the USA took the gold, beating silver medalists Canada by one game, finishing 6-5. The bronze medal went to Sweden who tromped Switzerland 11 games to 4.

The opening game of the 2010 IIHF World Championship is between last year’s silver medalists the United States taking on this year’s event hosts, Germany.

Stanley Cup Teams Finalized: Blackhawks vs. Flyers

May 28th, 2010 Sportsbook Promo Code Staff Posted in Hockey No Comments »

Well, it’s been decided. The Stanely Cup Playoffs are over for another year and the next NHL game coming up is the 2010 Stanley Cup itself, with Chicago and Philadelphia facing off for this year’s top title in U.S. hockey.

After their win 4-2 this past Sunday, May 23 over the San Jose Sharks, the Chicago Blackhawks landed the first spot in the 2010 Stanley Cup, and with the same score, the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Montreal Canadiens on Monday, May 24 for the second (and final) spot in the 2010 Stanley Cup.

Can Philadelphia’s Mike Richards, Arron Asham, and Jeff Carter score for their team again on May 29 like they did in the playoffs? Or will Chicago’s Brent Seabrook, Dustin Byfuglien, and Kris Versteeg pull out a win for their team again? Which goalies – the Flyers’ Jaroslav Halak and Brian Boucher or the Blackhawks’ Antti Niemi and Michael Leighton – will protect their team better from scores by their opponents?

The Flyers and the Blackhawks only met once on the ice this season, and that was in the Wachovia Center back on March 13 when the Flyers won 3-2 thanks to a winning goal by Chris Pronger. Still, latest prognostications predict the Blackhawks taking this year’s championship, even though they haven’t played in the Stanley Cup since 1992 and the Flyers make for a much better story this season. In points for season, the Blackhawks finished up with 112, ranking them 3rd in the league for 2010, with the Flyers trailing 24 points behind them. In the U.S., the 2010 NHL Stanley Cup will be broadcast in HD on NBC TV.

Can 2010 Olympic Medalists Take The Flyers To The Next Stanley Cup?

March 7th, 2010 Sportsbook Promo Code Staff Posted in Hockey No Comments »

The men’s hockey portion of the 2010 Winter Olympics is over, and now hockey fans are looking toward the upcoming 2010 Stanley Cup. And where many of them are looking, at this moment, is to the Flyers.

Fresh off winning Olympic gold medals in Vancouver as part of Team Canada in an incredible 3-2 win against the American team in overtime, two Philadelphia Flyers return home (to the States that is—though not quite yet to Philly) just in time to try and help their team make it to the 2010 Sanley Cup. Their first game back will be in Tampa against the Lightning.

Might some of Chris Pronger and Mike Richards’ Olympic glory rub off on their teammates enough to go all the way for a 2010 Stanley Cup victory? It’s a plausible bet, at the very least. Especially considering the other factors involved.

For starters there’s only around 20 games left, and even though the Flyers were in 6th place in the Eastern Conference at last check, they have won four consecutive games.

Remember also that Kimmo Timonen, another Flyer defenseman like Pronger, also made a fine showing in the recent Olympics as part of Team Finland, which won the bronze medal. It was Timonen’s contribution, in fact, that took Team Finland just over the mark to beat Slovakia for the bronze. Richards, by the way, assisted in the first goal of the Olympic game that won Team Canada the 2010 gold medal.

And a fourth Flyers teammate, Oskars Bartulis, played for the Latvian team in these recent Winter Olympics as well, giving Philly four Olympic players helping them shoot for their first Stanley Cup appearance in over a quarter of a century.
